Widening the Circle: engaging with the UUA Commission on Institutional Change’s (COIC)
After Sunday’s Service, many of you expressed interest in having some kind of a discussion/study group that delved deeper into issues of White Privilege and Supremacy especially as to how we First UU may live out our own privilege. Here is one opportunity (and it will be happening on the 2nd Wednesday evening of every month so mark your calendars). It would be great if you let me know that you are intending to come simply so I can have a guesstimate about numbers. Also if you cannot make this week you will be able to come to the other sessions. Zoom information at the end of this email please note the new password. If you share this on social media please do not share the password but encourage people to contact me for the password of give it to them privately (we are trying to keep zoom bombers at bay)
Please review the chapter on Theology before Wednesday’s session.
At the New Orleans General Assembly in 2017, the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) Commission on Institutional Change was established and charged by the UUA Board of Trustees to conduct an audit of white privilege and the structure of power within Unitarian Universalism, and analyze structural racism and white supremacy culture within the UUA. The Commission was in place for three years through the Virtual General Assembly in June of 2020.
Over the three years, the Commission on Institutional Change shared regular communications through the Institutional Change Blog and various social media platforms. The Commission has curated discussion guides, videos, and presentations for congregations, fellowships, covenant circles, and other forms of community to engage in the work of institutional change. These resources are substantial materials to support the final work of the Commission, Widening the Circle of Concern: Report of the UUA Commission on Institutional Change, presented to the Board of Trustees and General Assembly in June 2020.
