Workshop Goals:
- Understanding how we are all hurt by the male code and how this sometimes leads us to hurt others.
- Reclaiming our inherent goodness and creating closer connections with each other.
- Making specific plans to foster deep friendships after the workshop.
- Actively allying with the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements—deciding as males to work towards ending violence against females and non-binary people.
NPR aired an hour-long program about how many, many middle-aged men feel isolated, and have no close platonic relationships. They also noted that males commit suicide 3.5 times as often as females.
Males are taught to win at all costs, to never show vulnerability, to target those who are perceived as weak, to frequently speak our minds but not to listen closely, to leave the nurturing to females, to close our minds to non-traditional thinking and many more harmful ideas. None of this speaks to who we truly are and what we can be.
We lose our inherent abilities to be playful and silly, to passionately pursue the creative arts, to confide in our friends and intimate partners, and even to frequently stay in touch with each other. We can change if we see this as a challenge to reclaim all of our loving humanity.
At this workshop we will practice contradicting the messages and scripts of male oppression as we learn to embrace each other as completely good human beings, to see females and people who identify beyond the binary of male-female as our close allies, and to give ourselves permission to be open and loving with children and adults.
