May 2017

As the weather warms and we approach the end of the official church year and the beginning of summer services, our music program is still going strong. We have a few small ensembles and a soloist prepared to share music and lead congregational song for our Eath Day Celebration this week.

Our -ISH Choir has been working hard to prepare for Music Sunday on May 7th. We will be exploring the embodiment of the words in our mission statement: Justice with Love and Joy, Open(ness) to Awe.

Song-Leading Classes!

What happens to the music when the services are layled, such as in our summer services? That depends on who is willing and available to lead the hymns and / or play a prelude, postlude, or offertory. People of all ages, vocalists and instrumentalists, are welcome to come and learn how to lead hymns. We will work with a short list of well-known hymns, working through simple concepts in song-leading to help guide our congregation even when the Music Director is not here. After the classes, the Worship and Music team will hopefully be provided with a list of what hymns people are comfortable leading, and which services they are available to play at during the summer. Attend one or all of the the classes. Please let Sara Jo Brandt-Doelle know you are planning to attend, so she can prepare for the correct people and instruments or voices.

Class Dates: May 21, 12:15 – 1:15 pm; May 25, 7-8 pm; May 31, 6-7 pm All classes will be in the sanctuary.

Vesper Service

The final Vesper service for this church year will be held May 17 at 6 pm. This service should last less than one hour, and will combine music, readings and meditation as we explore our theme of embodiment. We will also have a small instrumental ensemble helping us with some of the singing. Readers and someone to run the projector are needed. Please contact Sara jo Brandt-Doelle to volunteer to help with the service, or if you have any questions.

String Players

I am currently in search of chord-playing string instrumentalists – guitars, ukuleles, mandolin, etc to help accompany our Hymn of the Month later in May. Please contact me if you are interested.

Choir rehearsals for May will be:
Thursday evenings, at 7:15 in the sanctuary May 4, 18
Sunday mornings, at 9:15 in the sanctuary May 7, 14, and 21.
